August 2, 2005. $2130.00

Today we put together the "welcome back" packet. It took the president of the PTA 30 hours last week to do all the layout, copying, and planning of the packet. There were ten people this morning working for 1.5 to 2 hours each, compiling the packets and bundling them for the teachers. They contained the children's contact forms, free and reduced lunch forms, notices from the principal, lunch information, PTA information, all (or most) of it in English and Spanish. Our children ran around on the playground outside while an older child looked after them. She should probably be paid for her time, as well. Going rate would be at least $15/hr for that type of babysitting, considering that there were ten young children to look after.
Total billed: President's work, at $20/hr: $600.00
Office work, at $10/hr: $1500.00
Babysitting: $30.00

This is such a brilliant idea! Rock on. Jane
Contact the California State PTA office and find out how many volunteer hours were logged last year- and that only covers the schools with PTA!
I agree - let's get some stats and it would be especially interesting to see how they have changed over time. I bet that most of the hours of work are not logged with the PTA so anything you get from them will be a gross underestimate - and won't differentiate between the values of different kinds of work.
Volunteer time is a force to be reckoned with. It makes our country great in some ways but, at the same time, it allows government's to abdicate many of their responsibilities - unfortunately they usually abdicate against those least able to care for or advocate for themselves.
This is such a great idea. I've emailed this link to our PTA Pres. You rock!
Good on you all.
I live in Texas, and am the parent of a child with autism. In a discussion at our parenting group about the "epidemic" of autism, a parent brought up Schwarzie's banning of thimerosal-preserved immunizations and how rockin' that was, what a smart guy he was.
I looked straight at her and said, "I'll be impressed when he stops driving an SUV."
Wooooo, the silence. The heavy, heavy silence that greeted me pointing out that Saint Governator has feet of brittle clay.
As a friend who lives in California says, "Let them try raising a kid here."
I should add that I make no value judgement against people who drive SUVs that NEED the size and space one provides (like my parent's standby, the station wagon).
What I mean is the only people who need Hummers (as in the fugly giant shoebox SUV) are soldiers in combet, who are the people it was designed for. HumVees have no place as private vehicle.
What does Govenator drive? A HumVee. In a state so congested, with traffic and pollution concerns, I'd think an exemplary leader would ditch their SUV posthaste.
That's what I meant by the SUV remark in my previous post.
I used to live in California, and I'm a native. My heart goes out to everyone in California trying to get their children the public school education that their taxes have paid for.
Wow, this whole thing is definitely a killer idea. I applaud your brilliance and I sincerely hope it makes a difference.

I'm trying to finish college at MSU and wanted to make a couple of extra bucks. I got scammed quite a few times, but found something that actually makes me about $200 bucks a month now. I know it isn't much, but at least it is legit. You can check it out and I hope it helps you out too.
